Dropped Your iPad and Cracked the Screen?

Cracked iPad Screens are more common than you might think. Hundreds of damaged iPads are replaced every day, and the number is growing.

So, why do so many iPad’s get damaged? The problem is two-fold. First of all, the iPad is designed to be mobile. They are carried around, passed from person to person and left on chairs and tables. This is what makes the iPad great, but at the same time, makes it vulnerable to damage. Secondly, unlike the traditional laptop, iPad’s have an exposed screen. Again, this is practical and provides great functionality, but does make them more prone to getting cracked.

Furthermore, the iPad is designed to be sleek, but at the same time have a large touch screen. This results in a thin lightweight shell, which is only just big enough to fit the internal contents of the device. There really isn’t much protection around the screen, and if you drop it, chances are the screen is going to hit something.

If you have dropped your iPad, and found the glass is cracked in several places, you do have a couple of options. It depends on how severely you have cracked the screen, but the first thing you should do is take it to your local Apple Store.

Hopefully your iPad is still under warranty. If this is the case, the Apple Store should give you a replacement. Otherwise, you could be looking at a costly bill.

Another option is to buy a touch screen digitizer and try and fix the iPad yourself. However, this isn’t recommended, and if you tamper with the glass on the iPad, the warrantee will be void.

If you have home contents insurance, you should call up your insurance provider and describe what happened. In some cases your cracked iPad screen may be covered under your premium.

As with most things in life, prevention is better than the cure. If you are a particularly clumsy person and have already damaged your iPad, you should invest in an iPad case or protector. The small investment you make today may well save you hundreds of dollars in the future.

Not only does an iPad case protect your screen, but it will stop you from picking up small scratches, scrapes, and bumps. This is an expensive piece of equipment we’re talking about here, it makes perfect sense to keep it in good condition and protect it from damage.
